Wednesday's Wardrobe: Memorial Day Weekend

Remember when I wrote that post for my pal Sage about how to pack smartly/lightly? I decided to lead by example and show you my Memorial Day weekend attire. I relied on a suitcase full of pink, navy and white (a subtle patriotic nod) pieces in sturdy denim, khaki and cottons for easy mixing and matching.

I wore this for our car ride down to Luray, VA.  If you have ever had the pleasure of experiencing D.C.-area traffic you know you are not going anywhere fast on a holiday weekend. Thus, I opted for broken in jeans, a soft baggy tee, flip flops and a big, bright scarf.  I love scarfs for long car rides as they can be draped against the A/C chill or rolled into makeshift pillows.
Tee - Old Navy, Jeans - Levi's, Scarf - Nordstrom Rack, Sandal's - Kino

Saturday we met friends at a beer and wine festival in Massanutten, VA.  I wanted to wear something cute yet comfortable for our day of tasting so I opted for this hot pink khaki skirt, flowy sailboat top and espadrilles.
Top - Milly via Gilt Groupe (similar here), Skirt - Tommy Hilfiger, Shoes - Payless, Sunglasses - Cole Haan, Bracelets - DIY/Ann Taylor Loft, Purse - Gift from my In laws, Belt - Filene's Basement

Sunday we explored Luray Caverns and did some leisurly hiking walking off Skyline Drive. It was really hot that day so I chose this breezy cotton top, denim cutoffs and flip flops.
Top - Forever 21(similar here), Shorts - Old Navy, Flip flops - Kino, Sunglasses - Cole Haan,  Bracelets - Target/Ann Taylor Loft

Monday we headed home after a quick breakfast, mmm apple donut. While it was still quite warm I knew I might get chilly in the car's A/C so I tossed on this uber-comfy striped sweatshir with cutoffs and a ball cap (two days in the woods and my hair don't mix.)  I love messenger bags for travel/errand running and this soft leather one is no exception.
Sweatshirt - Nordstrom, Shorts - Old Navy, Shoes - Payless, Knot Bracelet - Made by Sister in Law, Purse - Gift, Sunglasses - Cole Haan, Hat - Go Red Sox!

What are your go to packing items?  Do you pack by color, fabric types, lightweight items? Please share!

You are so right about the drive in DC on a holiday weekend. My parents live in Fredericksburg and the first year we lived in the area, my mother got stuck in traffic headed home on the Friday of Memorial Day for 5 hours (Tyson's Corner to F'burg). FIVE. She got up the next morning and traded in her Jeep for a hybrid! :)

I love your outfits! So cute! And your sandals are all awesome too!
Loving that scarf to-great way to dress up a plain t-shirt! I have to remember to do that more often.

Fun outfit choices! I love the sailboat top, it's a really fun print! Also love the scarf with the plain tee, it definitely dresses it up!

I try to go with light layers when I pack, skirts are always a great choice in the summer because they aren't too bulky. Tanks/t-shirts are good too. I try to come up a couple of items that can be matched up to a couple of different things so I have some choices too, so I suppose I pack in a similar color pallet. I think it's harder to travel in the winter when heavier clothing items are needed!
